Rabbi Moshe Hirsch looks down while sitting in the dining room of his home in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim in west Jerusalem 14 July 2002, where he has been living for the past 50 years. Rabbi Hirsch, who is in his sixties, is the leader of the minority group "Neturei karta" or "the guard of the cities". The group refuses to accept the creation of a Jewish state before the coming of the Messiah, as is commanded in the Torah, and believes that the modern Israeli state is "sacrilegious because it is based on secularism and nationalism". Hirsch, who refers to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as "my best friend, my brother!", is also minister for Jewish affairs in the Palestinian Authority.
